In the 1930’s, The public Enemy crystallized the theme of Little Caesar and delved even more deeply into the making of a gangster. Directed by William Wellman the film follows two young boys and their growth from shoplifters to hardened criminals. It stars James Cagney and Jean Harlow (whose role is minimal, yet billed on every poster). More coherent and focused than Little Caesar (it included dates to orient the audience when time passed); Public Enemy was also more violent, and helped to spur the cry for censorship.

An outstanding performance by Tom Alter, this film is one under-rated gem.

Wong Kar-Wai's movie about two love-struck cops is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion and color. The first half deals with Cop 223, who has broken up with his girlfriend of five years. He purchases a tin of pineapples with an expiration date of May 1 each day for a month. By the end of that time, he feels that he will either be rejoined with his love or that it too will have expired forever. The second half shows Cop 663 dealing with his breakup with his flight attendant girlfriend. He talks to his apartment furnishings until he meets a new girl at a local lunch counter.

Pierre Lachenay is a well-known publisher and lecturer, married with Franca and father of Sabine, around 10. He meets an air hostess, Nicole. They start a love affair, which Pierre is hiding, but he cannot stand staying away from her.
