On a remote and isolated island, ten people – 8 invited guests and two servants – findthemselves facing their own deaths. Their unidentified host informs them, via a gramophone records, that as they have all been responsible for someone’s death, they in turn will die before the weekends is out. There is no way for any of them to flee the island, so they set about trying to determine who their hidden host might be and where he might be hiding ( Popular Indian Film Gumnaam (1965) is inspired by this film.

Usually considered the first sound feature, this 1927 film is pretty much silent except for a few lines of dialogue and Al Jolson's songs. This movie tells the story of young Jakie Rabinowitz , the son of a cantor who wants him to follow in his footsteps, but the singer prefers secular music. He attempts to build a career as an entertainer, but his professional ambitions ultimately come into conflict with the demands of his home and heritage.

A very simple premise, its just the basis for what can be called as one of the most deceptively powerful films of recent times. Nominated for Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film cemented Iranian maestro Majid Majidi’s place in world cinema.

Frank (Humphrey Bogort) visits a rundown hotel run by crippled James Temple (Lionel Barrymore) and his daughter-in-law Nora (Lauren Bacall), widow of Frank’s friend from the war. The hotel has been taken over by Johny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) and his mistress (Clair Trevor) and his murder of two Indians convinces Frank that Rocco must be stopped. His only chance comes when Rocco forces Frank to pilot the gang’s boat towards Cuba.

In the 1930’s, The public Enemy crystallized the theme of Little Caesar and delved even more deeply into the making of a gangster. Directed by William Wellman the film follows two young boys and their growth from shoplifters to hardened criminals. It stars James Cagney and Jean Harlow (whose role is minimal, yet billed on every poster). More coherent and focused than Little Caesar (it included dates to orient the audience when time passed); Public Enemy was also more violent, and helped to spur the cry for censorship.

Once a school teacherv- now an old man, living in an old dingy japanese binker, reminiscing the bygone days and unfailingly conducting classes under a solitary tree talking to the moon and the ocean. An outstanding performance by Tom Alter, this film is one under-rated gem.

 

Best 5 films of Akira Kurosawa

Wong Kar-Wai's movie about two love-struck cops is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion and color. The first half deals with Cop 223, who has broken up with his girlfriend of five years. He purchases a tin of pineapples with an expiration date of May 1 each day for a month. By the end of that time, he feels that he will either be rejoined with his love or that it too will have expired forever. The second half shows Cop 663 dealing with his breakup with his flight attendant girlfriend. He talks to his apartment furnishings until he meets a new girl at a local lunch counter.

Pierre Lachenay is a well-known publisher and lecturer, married with Franca and father of Sabine, around 10. He meets an air hostess, Nicole. They start a love affair, which Pierre is hiding, but he cannot stand staying away from her.

A story between a mole in the police department and an undercover cop. Their objectives are the same: to find out who is the mole, and who is the cop.
