Evading a country weekend planned by his brother Wick and girlfriend Helen, he begins a four-day bender. In flashbacks we see past events, all gone wrong because of the bottle. But this bout looks like being his last...one way or the other.

From harsh melodramas Like Double Indemnity (1944), The Lost Weekend (1945) and Sunset Boulevard (1950), to farcical comedies like as The Seven Year Itch (1955) and Some Like It Hot (1959), to satires like A Foreign Affair (1948) And The Apartment (1960), his impressive film repertoire is an important part of film history.
