Regarded as one of the most significant works in the history of silent pictures, as well as possibly Eisenstein’s supreme work, Battleship Potemkin brought his theories of cinema art to the world in a powerful showcase; his emphasis on montage, his stress of intellectual contact, and his treatment of the mass instead of the individual as the protagonist. The film tells the story of the Russian ship Prince Potemkin where a horribly bloody mutiny took place during the 1905 uprising. Eisenstein signals this as the jumping off point for the revolution.

An outstanding performance by Tom Alter, this film is one under-rated gem.

 

Best 5 films of Akira Kurosawa

Wong Kar-Wai's movie about two love-struck cops is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion and color. The first half deals with Cop 223, who has broken up with his girlfriend of five years. He purchases a tin of pineapples with an expiration date of May 1 each day for a month. By the end of that time, he feels that he will either be rejoined with his love or that it too will have expired forever. The second half shows Cop 663 dealing with his breakup with his flight attendant girlfriend. He talks to his apartment furnishings until he meets a new girl at a local lunch counter.

Pierre Lachenay is a well-known publisher and lecturer, married with Franca and father of Sabine, around 10. He meets an air hostess, Nicole. They start a love affair, which Pierre is hiding, but he cannot stand staying away from her.
