Usually considered the first sound feature, this 1927 film is pretty much silent except for a few lines of dialogue and Al Jolson's songs. This movie tells the story of young Jakie Rabinowitz , the son of a cantor who wants him to follow in his footsteps, but the singer prefers secular music. He attempts to build a career as an entertainer, but his professional ambitions ultimately come into conflict with the demands of his home and heritage.Home Video2011 -

BIn their last film together, the Marx brothers give a laugh riot. The film focuses on the Marx brothers, who are employed at a hotel in post-war Casablanca, where a ring of Nazis is trying to recover a cache of stolen treasure. From surreal to slapstick, the plot races towards one of the silliest climaxes everHome Video2011 -

Abandoned by their families to lives of penury, marked by the white veils which they wear, Bengali widows find solace and food in the ashrams of Vrindavan where they gather every morning and evening to sing religious songs. In this profoundly moving documentary on widowhood portrayed both as social institution and personal tradition, moments of astonishing sensuous beauty alternate with rhythms of anguish. In the best of the new ethnographic tradition, ‘Moksha’ de-centres the voices of authority and allows a plurality of voices to introduce contesting positions. Haunting in its evocation of grief and anger, the film transcends documentary and assumes its place in the great tradition of lamentation, the expression of the dark night of the human soul.Home Video2011 -

The first part of Ford’s celebrated cavalry trilogy, it depicts the story of an arrogant lieutenant Colonel’s disastrous succession to power at the eponymous military base, culminating in an ill-advised battle with Cochise’s apache warriors - is a frequently funny, pleasingly critical, and sadly convincing exploration of human and military fallibilities and virtues. John Wayne as Captain Kirby York and Henry Fonda as Custer Clone Lt. Col. Owen Thursday give astounding performances.Home Video2011 -

The Marx brothers' duck soup is widely considered as the slapstick team's masterwork. A madcap script which is mockingly surreal, it is the chronicle of a war fever that swallows up the imaginary nation of Fredonia when Groucho becomes its dictator. Harpo and Chico play bumbling spies, with Zeppo relegated to the romantic subplot. There are countless famous sequences in the films, including the famous "mirror routine" and a stirring harmonious climax.Home Video2011 -

Devoid of cynicism of post-modern dramas, this heart-warming film tells the story of nine year old Ali, who loses his sister Zahra’s newly repaired shoes. Frightened to tell their parents the truth, they devise a plan to share one pair of shoes between them.
Zahra wears them to school early morning, and then runs to meet Ali who wears them to his later classes. A very simple premise, its just the basis for what can be called as one of the most deceptively powerful films of recent times. Nominated for Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film cemented Iranian maestro Majid Majidi’s place in world cinema.Home Video2011 -

Based on Alexandre Dumas Fils' La Dame aux Camélias, the film depicts a doomed romance of a courtesan in 19th century Paris. Greta Garbo's portrayal of the beautiful but sickly Parisian courtesan, who fatefully falls in love with a young French nobleman (25 year-old Robert Taylor), is widely considered the definitive version of the romantic tragedy.Home Video2011 -

Regarded as one of the most significant works in the history of silent pictures, as well as possibly Eisenstein’s supreme work, Battleship Potemkin brought his theories of cinema art to the world in a powerful showcase; his emphasis on montage, his stress of intellectual contact, and his treatment of the mass instead of the individual as the protagonist. The film tells the story of the Russian ship Prince Potemkin where a horribly bloody mutiny took place during the 1905 uprising. Eisenstein signals this as the jumping off point for the revolution.Home Video2011 -

In the 1930’s, The public Enemy crystallized the theme of Little Caesar and delved even more deeply into the making of a gangster. Directed by William Wellman the film follows two young boys and their growth from shoplifters to hardened criminals. It stars James Cagney and Jean Harlow (whose role is minimal, yet billed on every poster). More coherent and focused than Little Caesar (it included dates to orient the audience when time passed); Public Enemy was also more violent, and helped to spur the cry for censorship.Home Video2011 -

Commissioned by Hitler, this is a documentary on 1934 Nazi party
convention in Nuremberg which glorified Hitler as the true leader who
will bring glory back to the nation and emphasized Germany as a great
power. One of the most infamous documentaries ever, it was hated by
millions who suffered because of the people glorified in the film.
However, it cemented Riefenstahl's status as a great filmmaker.Home Video2011 -

The film is a satire of the conflict between art and commerce as well as the gap betweenthe privileged and the impoverished. It tells of the 'mission' of 'Sully' (Joel McCrea), a big-shot Hollywood director of lightweight comedies to experience suffering in the world before
producing his next about the common man. After some failed attempts dressed as a hobo and companionship on the road with an aspiring blonde actress simply called The Girl (Veronica
Lake) and wearing boy's clothes, he succeeds in losing his freedom, identity and name, health, pride and money. A classic comedy of the depression era, this is a must for Preston Sturges fans.Home Video2011 -
