  • A Film Festival to commemorate the 200 thanniversary of Charles Dickens

    New Delhi | India: Taj Enlighten Film Society and British Council are celebrating the200 th anniversary of the literary legend Charles Dickens through theorganization of a film festival at the British Council, New Delhi on 16 thand 17 th February 2012.

    The festival willfeature cinematic adaptations of the Dicken’s writings by some of the mostimportant film directors of all time. The ambition of the festival willtherefore be, to compare the forms of storytelling inherent in two separatemedia, as also to examine a successful transition of a story from literature tofilm.

    The two-day festivalwill inaugurate with a film usually considered to be the most complete Dickensadaptations – The Great Expectations(1946) by another British master, director David Lean. The screening ofthis film will be followed by Robert Zemeckis’s 2009 animated feature starringJim Carrey and Gary Oldman, A ChristmasCarol. The first day of the festival will conclude with a special EnlightenDVD launch of the classic Dickens tale of regret, loss, nostalgia, generosityand humanity: A Christmas Carol (1938) by Edwin L. Marin.

    The line-up on the second day of the festivalwill include the screening of Roman Polanksi’s 2005 adaptation of Oliver Twist. This will be followed bythe launch of another Enlighten DVD – the adaptation of the same tale by DavidLean from 1948: Oliver Twist (1948)by David Lean.
    The festival will feature post-filminteractions, literature on Charles Dickens and exclusive DVD launches.

    Dickens 2012 is a major programme of events and activities to mark the bicentenary of Charles Dickens, who was born on 7 February 1812. The British Council – the UK’s cultural relations body – is working with partners including the Charles Dickens Museum and Film London to develop global activity that will include brand new film adaptations, art exhibitions, public readings, immersive theatre, educational events and creative workshops.

    Dickens is a fascinating writer who lives on as an inspirational figure in English literature. This project innovatively re-imagines him for the 21st century and we are working with great partners to ensure the programme will have truly global reach. It demonstrates the engagement with this canonical writer worldwide and how much Dickens’ critique and vision of his society still resonates for us all today
